ASSAM (India) Black Tea --- Historically, the Assam tea bush is a subgenus of Camellia sinensis. This variety of tea was found growing wild in the Assam Province of Northeast India when the British East India Company was studying a proposal to grow tea in India. It was successfully cultivated in Assam and by May 1838 a few chests were shipped to London. The first consignment of eight chests of Assam tea was auctioned off in 1839 heralding the advent of Indian tea on the World Markets. This tea is a classic top- quality Assam, very full-bodied and tending "juicy". Quite often milk is used to tone down the strength of the tea. $2.48/oz. SENCHA FUJI (Japan) Green Tea --- Tea was introduced to Japan from China in the 7th and 8th Century. Records indicate that Japan's Emperor Kammu gave visiting monks an imperial gift of green tea. Emperor Kammu created a government post called 'Supervisor of Tea' as Japan began to cultivate its own tea. That this post was in the medical bureau, indicates that even then, there was tremendous respect for the health aspects of tea. Further evidence of the correlation between health and tea, was found in a small book written in the 1200's, 'Tea Drinking is Good for Health'. The book tells that tea drinking confers many health benefits. $3.79/oz. BUY NOW --- For More Information, Photo, Brewing, & Ingredients...

Organic
teas are the ones that are grown in tea estates with absolutely no chemical
inputs or artificial fertilizers. Nutrition for the tea bushes is provided
by the use of Vermiculture and large scale application of compost and oil
cakes. All pest and disease control is carried out by purely natural methods
of cultivation. Compost, neem cake and castor cake are dug into trenches to
enhance the soil. In addition, neem acts as a natural insect repellant. The
soil in the estates is carefully inspected throughout the year by the
certifying body. A new estate receives a certificate that says organic in
transit for the first three years of its conversion. After the three-year
period a regular organic certification is issued. Certificates are reissued
every year after inspections. |
